Craps Terminology & Lingo

If you have never played craps the terminology used at this site and at the craps tables might be a bit unusual. The purpose of this terminology section is to give you a dictionary of commonly used and heard craps related terms.

A

Ace Deuce – Name for a roll made up of 1 and 2
Aces – Another word for 1
Advantage – The statistical edge that the casino has over the player
Any 7 – A bet that the next roll of the dice will total 7
Any Craps – A bet that the next roll of the dice will be a total of 2, 3 or 12

B

Back Line – Another way to say Don’t Pass Line
Behind the Line – A bet on the odds after the come out roll
Bet – Any wager placed on the craps table
Betting Wrong – Betting the dice will not win. Eg. Betting on Don’t Pass
Big 6 – A bet that a 6 will will be rolled before a 7. Pays 1 to 1
Big 8 – A bet that an 8 will will be rolled before a 7. Pays 1 to 1
Big Red – A bet that the next roll will be a 7
Black – Typically the color of the $100 chips
Buy Bet – Paying 5% commission to get actual odds on a Place Bet

C

C & E – A two unit bet wagering 1 on Craps (C)and 1 on Eleven (E)
Chips – Discs used to place bets on the craps table
Color Change – Changing small denomination chips for larger ones
Come Bet – The same as Pall Line bets except made after the come out roll
Come Out Roll – The first roll of the dice that starts a new game
Comps – Short for complimentary – Extra incentives given to the player
Crap – Short for the rolls totaling 2, 3 or 12

D

Dice – The small cubes which have sides numbered from 1 to 6
Dime – Short for a $10 bet
Don’t Come – A bet that roll will not pass after the come out roll
Don’t Pass – A bet before the come out roll that a 7 will be rolled
Double Odds – A free odds bet made at double the initial wager

E

Easy Way – A dice total that is not made up of the same numbers
Edge – The advantage the casino has over the player
Even Money – A bet that pays 1 to 1

F

Field – A bet that the next roll will be 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12
Free Odds – A bet that has no house edge
Front Line – Another way of saying Pass Line

H

Hardway – A total that has both dice on the same number.
Hi – Lo – A bet on 12 and 2. The highest and lowest possible rolls
Horn Bet – A four unit bet made on 2, 3, 11 and 12

I

Inside Numbers – 5, 6, 8 or 9

L

Lay Bet – Betting that a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 will be rolled before a 7
Laying the Odds – A bet on the Don’t Pass Odds
Line Bet – A bet placed on the pass line or don;t pass line

N

Nickel – Short for a $5 bet

O

Odds Bet – A bet that has no house edge and offers true odds
Off – Shows a bet or bets are not active on the next roll
On – Shows a bet or bets are active on the next roll
One Roll Bet – A bet that is won or lost on the next roll

P

Pass – A roll that makes a point or totals 7 or 11
Pass Line – The most common bet on the craps table. Pays 1 to 1
Place Bet – A bet that 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 will be rolled before a 7
Point – A number made on the come out roll that is not 2, 3, 7, 11 or 12
Proposition Bets – A group of high edge bets in the center of the table
Purple – Another way of identifying $500 chips

Q

Quarter – Another way of saying a $25 chip

S

Seven Out – When a 7 is rolled before the point
Shooter – The player who is throwing the dice
Stickman – The casino employee who is in charge of the table

T

True Odds – A bet that pays the actual odds of the outcome occurring

W

Wrong Bettor – A player betting on the don’t pass line

V

Vig – Short for Vigorish, The percentage paid to the house on some bets

Y

Yo – Also Yo Eleven, Used to announce 11 since 7 and 11 sound similar
